Chapter 12

“That was ... interesting,” Alex said once we were back in the truck, and I knew he was still a little salty about not catching on like I had. We’d practiced for another hour or so. By the time we’d wrapped it up, he’d managed to move some smaller stones with a little more accuracy, but he still hadn’t managed the bigger ones.

“It was cool, was what it was,” Chaos said a little chirpier that I’d have liked. Beating him fair and square was one thing, but I didn’t feel like it was right to tease him when he was struggling. One, it was mean, and two, he might just catch on and start smoking me at it, and my teasing would come back and bite me on the butt.

I gave him a small, sideways grin as I buckled my seatbelt. “You gotta admit, it was sorta cool. I can’t believe we never thought to try that before.”

The scowl slipped off his face and his forehead smoothed. “All right. It was kinda cool. But I’ll beat you next time!”

“Sure, you will, sweetie,” I said, smirking at him. “You just keep tellin’ yourself that.”

The scowl returned a little but didn’t last for long. He wasn’t one to pout, which was one of the things I loved most about him.

“So, what did you think of Dom’s family?” he asked.

I chewed my lip as he turned off Sean’s drive and onto the main road. “I think they’re all snobs.”

He laughed. “Well, yeah, but we knew that going in. What did you think of them individually?”

I thought for a minute. “I think Valentina is insecure and spoiled, and Miguel has confidence in spades, probably more than he has a right to. I want to like Allen, but I didn’t interact with him enough to get a solid read on him.”

Alex mulled that over, then nodded. “I agree, mostly. I think we need to consider that Miguel is arrogant rather than confident. He might be burying some insecurities there, and maybe even some jealousy. Allen was certainly more amenable. I think we might have Sean to thank for that. The younger ones might not respect just how powerful Sean really is, but the adults in the room did.”

“I wonder why he wants them to invest instead of just financing it himself.” It didn’t make any sense to me. Sean was protective of the town, and even though he was gung-ho to do it despite my misgivings, I also knew he’d pull the plug if things went sideways and it turned out that it wasn’t good for the town. If he used investors, it only seemed logical that he wouldn’t have that level of control. I said as much.

He glanced sideways at me. “You know Sean, though, and he promised you. He wouldn’t make a promise he couldn’t keep. I won’t even pretend to know anything about that level of investing, but I’m sure he has his reasons.”

“I suppose you’re right. I’m probably stressing too much about the whole thing, but I hate change.
